Ironman 70.3 Alcúdia Race Report

There’s something special about racing in Mallorca, and Ironman 70.3 Alcúdia certainly delivered an unforgettable experience. With crystal-clear waters, challenging mountain roads, and a fast but demanding run course, it was a race that tested every aspect of fitness and resilience.

Swim – 33:59

The day started with a fantastic swim in the beautiful waters of Alcúdia Bay. Conditions were almost perfect, with calm seas for most of the course and only a slight chop towards the far end of the swim. The clear water made for an enjoyable and relaxed start to the race, allowing me to settle into a steady rhythm early on. Coming out of the water in 33:59, I felt comfortable and ready for the challenges ahead.

Bike – 3:07

The bike course was where the real work began.

One of the standout features of the course was the notorious mountain climb, with around 7 miles of climbing averaging close to 10% gradient. It was a tough test of strength and pacing, but the incredible scenery and atmosphere made the effort worthwhile.

The reward for reaching the top was a superb fast descent, allowing some much-needed recovery while enjoying one of the most spectacular sections of the course. However, the race was far from over. The final stretch brought a relentless challenge in the form of approximately 30km of headwind, forcing riders to work hard for every mile. Holding speed into a headwind that strong required patience, determination, and plenty of power. Despite the conditions, I completed the bike leg in 3:07.

Run – 1:37

Heading out onto the run, I knew the bike had taken its toll. My legs felt noticeably heavy after the tough climb and battling the headwinds, but I focused on maintaining a steady pace and keeping the momentum going.

The support around the course was fantastic and helped carry me through the tougher moments. Once I settled into a rhythm, I was able to push on and enjoy the run, eventually crossing the line with a half marathon time of 1:37.

The Result

After a day of hard racing across all three disciplines, I finished 635th overall out of approximately 3,800 athletes, a result I'm incredibly pleased with given the challenging nature of the course and conditions.

Final Thoughts

Ironman 70.3 Alcúdia is a race that offers a little bit of everything: a beautiful sea swim, a demanding mountain bike course, and a run that rewards those who can keep moving after a tough ride. The combination of the long climb, fast descent, and relentless headwind made it one of the most challenging and rewarding bike courses I've raced.

Most importantly, it was another reminder that success in endurance sport isn't just about speed—it's about adapting to conditions, staying composed when things get tough, and continuing to push forward when your legs are asking you to stop.
