More Than Weight Loss: Paula's Journey Back to Living

When people think about personal training, they often picture dramatic weight loss transformations, six-packs, or marathon finish lines. But sometimes the biggest victories aren't measured on a scale or stopwatch.
Sometimes they're measured in quality of life.
This is Paula's story.
Taking the First Step
In October 2023, Paula walked into STRIVE for her first one-to-one session. At 56 years old, she describes herself as overweight, unhealthy, living with chronic pain, and feeling nervous about starting.
In fact, it had taken her six months to work up the courage to book a session.
"I went to Lee as a nervous 56-year-old menopausal woman who was fat, unhealthy and in lots of pain."
Paula had been battling chronic pelvic pain since 2010 and persistent left arm and shoulder pain since 2021. Years of pain had led to increasing reliance on medication and contributed to significant weight gain.
Like many people living with long-term health challenges, exercise felt intimidating. The fear of making things worse was always present.
Training Around Pain, Not Through It
From day one, the focus wasn't on pushing harder at all costs.
Instead, every session was built around what Paula could do.
We started with light resistance exercises for both her upper and lower body, gradually building strength and confidence. On difficult days, weights were reduced. On better days, we pushed forward.
"Lee has never judged me about my weight, my lack of fitness or lack of ability."
Living with chronic pain means no two weeks are the same. Flexibility and understanding became key parts of the process.
"He listened every week to me moaning and groaning about my pains and adjusted each week to cater for my needs."
Progress wasn't about perfection. It was about consistency.
A New Diagnosis, A New Challenge
In early 2025, Paula received a diagnosis that finally explained many of her symptoms: fibromyalgia.
For many people, such a diagnosis can feel overwhelming.
But by then, Paula had already spent over a year building strength, resilience, and healthy habits.
Rather than letting the diagnosis define her, she continued moving forward.
When Something Clicked
Towards the end of 2025, Paula experienced a shift in mindset.
"Something just clicked and I wanted to lose weight and get healthier."
The focus expanded beyond exercise alone. Together, we looked at nutrition, daily activity, hydration, and sustainable lifestyle changes.
There were monthly measurements, food guidance, plenty of encouragement, and, according to Paula, a relentless amount of reminding her to drink more water.
"I'm trying, Lee!"
Increasing daily steps became another important goal, helping build activity levels without adding unnecessary stress to her body.
The Real Transformation
Has Paula lost all the weight she wanted to lose? Not yet.
Does she consider herself super fit? Not yet.
But that's not the real success story.
The real success is that she is no longer spending her days sitting on the sofa feeling defeated by pain.
She's moving.
She's exercising.
She's making healthier choices.
She's maintaining her independence.
She's continuing to work part-time despite the challenges of fibromyalgia.
Most importantly, she's able to enjoy precious time with her grandchildren.
"If I had not met Lee in 2023, I don't think I would still be working and would be depressed, still very overweight, eating rubbish food and not be able to play with my grandchildren when I see them."
Why This Matters
At STRIVE, success isn't defined solely by the number on the scales.
It's about helping people build strength, confidence, resilience, and a better quality of life.
Paula's journey is proof that progress comes in many forms.
Every extra step.Every session completed.Every healthier choice.Every day spent living rather than simply coping.
Those victories matter.
Paula's Words
"So in conclusion, Lee has saved my life.
Have I lost the six stone yet? No.
Am I super fit? No.
But what I am doing is not sitting on the sofa, feeling sorry for myself and eating comfort food all day long.
Thank you Lee for everything you do for me."
Thank you, Paula, for trusting the process, showing up every week, and allowing us to be part of your journey. Your determination and resilience inspire everyone around you.
